On the afternoon of the 16th of February, at approximately 1300 hours, the Special Enforcement Bureau received a call regarding a kidnapping. One of the kidnappers was a suspect who was previously convicted of the murder of a police officer with a long rifle at Valentine's Complex. The kidnappers were located in the vicinity of Playa Del Seville and a detective, Diego Martinez, working out of the Homicide Bureau, engaged in the pursuit of the suspects in a Cabbie. The pursuit continued and at San Pedro Avenue, detective Martinez was then fired upon.
Following this Special Enforcement Bureau engaged a vehicular pursuit and while in it, the suspects opened fire at the tactical team units at Terminal Way. Units returned fire and managed to eliminate all the three kidnapping suspects at Imperial Avenue, just across the 38th street. Two of the suspects were armed with a handgun, while one with a long rifle. All three were neutralized without any deputy getting injured.
The fast response of the Special Enforcement Bureau tactical team prevented the incident from occurring into a life-threatening situation for the community members of the El Corona neighborhood.
